|Description:||Candlewick Press, a leading publisher of books for children, offers internships in the fall, spring and summer according to the needs of various departments. An independent publisher, we are a dynamic company that provides excellent opportunities to acquire firsthand knowledge of the publishing industry. We are looking for motivated, conscientious, and dedicated individuals who are eager to learn about the children's publishing industry and be part of a high-energy, creative team. Internships are determined on a need basis so there is a chance the department may not need an intern each semester.
When feasible, the following internship positions are available:
Marketing - Interns focus on one of two areas:
-School and Library Marketing: interns assist our school and library marketing team to coordinate timely mailings, including in-house programs (like Teen Buzz) and ALA award submissions (like the Newbery award); maintain various spreadsheets, including award submissions and reviews; update our website; fulfill desk copy requests; write newsletters; assist in various preparation for conventions
-Publicity: interns assist with media outreach and promotional events on behalf of books and authors, draft press materials, research awards and event venues, mail materials, assist with press clip maintenance and other general marketing duties.
Sales - interns assist with writing and organizing a department newsletter, researching and developing new markets, handling some clerical and administrative tasks, and assisting department members on new projects.
Publishing Services - interns proofread both published and upcoming titles, organize and review foul files, review advance books for corrigenda, facilitate the circulation of book materials between the various departments, assist with various production needs, and perform administrative tasks as needed.
Editorial - interns read and report on manuscripts, attend relevant meetings, perform library and bookstore research as needed, and assist editors with a variety of clerical and editorial duties.
Design- interns assist designers (fiction and picture book) with preliminary page set up, font research, format selection and scanning of illustrator sketches, assist Art Department Coordinator with making of book dummies and printing out layouts at actual size so some knowledge of paste-up and lay-out is required.
Graphic Production - interns provide graphic production/pre-media support to the Art department. The Graphic Production intern will perform image retouching in Photoshop (cloning, cleaning, color/density adjustments, etc.), they will also input text changes using InDesign, design back-matter ads, assist with preparing final files for print and the creation of Press-Ready PDFs for various vendor specifications. Candidates will gain experience in the technical aspects of book publishing, exposure to numerous print technologies, and strengthen their Adobe Creative Suite skill set. Must be proficient with Adobe Creative Suite applications (especially Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat professional). Knowledge of Quark XPress a plus.
Promotions Design -interns assist our promotions design team by working on new and on-going projects to promote our well-loved children's books --assisting with the creation of posters, bookmarks, displays, advertisements etc. so proficiency with MAC programs including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator is necessary.
Production and Manufacturing - Interns assist the Production team with project log-in and set up, preparation of materials for meetings, maintaining jobs files, and other tasks as needed.
Publishing Technologies - offers hands-on experience with several areas related to our digital publishing and marketing programs. The qualified intern will assist in a wide range of projects from video editing, to standard eBook processing, and perhaps even participate in content creation for some of our website initiatives. Other responsibilities could include processing PDF files for online look-inside-the-book programs, setting up and taking product shots, etc.. Candidates for this internship must be proficient on the Mac OS, understand the basics of video and audio editing using the Adobe Creative Suite applications (especially Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, InDesign, Audition, and Acrobat). Any eBook and basic HTML experience would be a bonus
|Length of Internship:||approximately 12 weeks per semester|
|Requirements:||The desired time commitment is typically about fourteen hours a week. Candidates must have excellent organizational skills as well as attention to detail. Our office is located at 99 Dover Street in Somerville, MA.|
|Application Due Date:||Deadlines for spring, summer, and fall semesters are December 30, April 5, and July 15 respectively.|
|Payment:||These positions do not offer any monetary compensation, however in exchange, we offer an invaluable opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the publishing world and make important professional contacts. Internships can be used for college credit.|
