Restless Books is an independent publisher of international literature, located in Gowanus, Brooklyn. We publish between 15-20 titles a year, many of them in translation, from all over the world. Our books include novels, memoirs, travel narratives, science fiction, graphic novels, and narrative nonfiction. More info at www.restlessbooks.com. TYPE OF INTERNSHIP: Unpaid publishing internship HOURS: Three days per week (flexible), 9:00am-5:00pm START DATE: Immediately INTERN TRAINING INCLUDES: Working closely with the Restless Books staff to gain experience in all aspects of book publishing, including marketing, publicity, sales, editorial, and nonprofit development. Conducting research, building and maintaining databases and contact lists Reading manuscripts and writing reader’s reports Drafting copy for the company newsletter, blog, and social media Contributing to social media accounts, especially Facebook and Twitter Collecting, logging, and distributing publicity materials Galley mailings to media, booksellers, librarians, and educators Research and grant applications for nonprofit development Participation in weekly marketing meetings and monthly editorial meetings Becoming familiar with titles in the Restless Books catalogue Attending promotional events for Restless Books with authors and translators |
Length of Internship: | 3–6 months (flexible) |
Requirements: | Interest in and familiarity with contemporary literature, world languages, marketing, and/or the publishing industry
Interest in marketing, publicity, sales, nonprofit development, copywriting, line editing, and/or social media Excellent reading and writing skills College degree completed or in progress in literature, a foreign language, business, or a related field Superior attention to detail Ability to meet deadlines and multitask Fluency in another language a plus, but not required Proficiency in cloud software such as Google Drive and Dropbox; design software such as Photoshop or InDesign; and marketing and social media platforms such as Mailchimp, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram a plus, but not required Preference will be given to candidates granted academic credit for participation in the internship. |
