Description: | What We Are Looking For:
One intern for the Summer 2023 season motivated by the opportunity to learn about the book publishing business from the unique perspective of an independent trade publishing company. Candidates for our internship positions are asked to commit to two to three days a week over the course of the season. Our editorially focused publishing internship is an opportunity to learn about all aspects of both print and digital book publishing in a small, friendly environment. Across all departments, including production, publicity and marketing, sales, and digital, but especially editorial, our interns will get the chance to gain experience and develop a variety of skills: • Researching and evaluating possible acquisitions • Writing clear, effective copy, including back cover copy, tip sheets, press materials, and blog posts • Proofreading a variety of materials • Maintaining websites and social media • Contributing to author/book publicity and marketing campaigns • Helping with periodic mailings and various administrative tasks Work hours are flexible between 9:30 and 6:30, Monday through Friday. Please note: Candidates are expected to work in person at our office in Gramercy Park on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We may pause this requirement and move to optional in-person work based on our assessment of COVID risk. What We Offer: A hospitable, low-stress work environment. Length of Internship: | Beginning in May or June and running through the end of August, depending on availability. Exact start and end dates to be determined at time of hire. We ask for at least a 3-month time commitment. |
Requirements: | Prospective interns must have at least completed their sophomore year in college. Highly desirable requirements are outstanding written and communication skills, a firm grasp of the basic rules of English grammar, and an efficient and organized way of doing things. An interest in nonfiction publishing, especially in the areas that The Experiment publishes, is preferred. Previous office experience is preferred but not mandatory. Curiosity and an inclination and ability to ask questions are essential, as is discretion. |
