Company Name: W. W. NORTON & COMPANY
Description: The college division at W. W. Norton & Company is seeking an intern from January to April 2020 to assist with print and digital editorial projects in the Biology department. The internship will offer insight into the editorial, marketing, and sales aspects of textbook publishing. Tasks will vary, but will include:
• assisting with preparation of manuscripts and electronic ancillary materials
• testing digital content and functionality on platforms such as Smartwork5 and InQuizitive
• researching market data
• cataloging and organizing digital assets, including figures and lecture PowerPoints
• Researching instructors who may be willing to adopt one of our books in order to get targeted reviewer feedback
• Collating reviewer feedback and organizing data in a comprehensive and digestible spreadsheet
• researching artwork and primary source texts
• assisting with reprints corrections
• other administrative duties, including mailing checks and marketing materials
Length of Internship: 3 months, 20 hours per week
Requirements: Ideal candidates are detail-oriented and organized, able to work independently in an office environment, proficient with the Microsoft Office suite, and interested in learning about college textbook publishing. A background in biology is not required. If you are applying to another Norton internship, please indicate as much in your cover letter. Specific hours are flexible, but interns must be available to work 3-4 days for a total of 20 hours per week over a three-month period. College juniors, seniors, and recent graduates preferred.

This is a great opportunity to learn how textbooks get made. You will see books in all stages of production—from the authors working on manuscript, to the printers shipping the final product to the warehouse. We encourage you to ask a lot of questions and get to know people in other departments to learn about different career paths in publishing.
