Company Name: W. W. NORTON & COMPANY
Description: The college division at W. W. Norton & Company is seeking a fall intern to assist with print and digital projects in the Manuscript Editing Department. The internship will offer insight into the managing-editorial processes of textbook publishing. Some of the titles in production this fall include America, A Narrative; Atoms-Focused Chemistry; American Politics Today; and The Family. Tasks will vary, but will include:
• Cross-checking various stages of proofs
• Proofreading manuscripts and proofs
• Applying design codes to manuscripts
• Giving feedback on first-edition manuscripts
• Reviewing table of contents and indexes
• Updating style sheets
• Scoring freelancers’ tests/exercises
• and other day-to-day office duties, such as scanning/photocopying proofs and organizing the department library.
Length of Internship: 3 months, 20 hours per week
Requirements: Ideal candidates are detail-oriented and organized, able to work independently in an office environment, and interested in learning about textbook publishing. Those with an interest in managing-editorial work are especially encouraged to apply. Helpful skills include careful time management, clear hand-writing and written communication, knowledge of proofreading and copyediting marks, and a close eye for details.

Payment: $15/hour
