Title: Acquisitions Editor

Acquisitions Editor (Hybrid or Remote Work Model)
Broadleaf Books

Broadleaf Books seeks an Acquisitions Editor to join the editorial department. The Acquisitions Editor is responsible for acquiring 15 adult trade nonfiction book manuscripts annually in areas that include but are not limited to spirituality, religion, politics, culture, and personal growth, intended for a broad, general-interest readership. The Acquisitions Editor reports to the Publisher, 1517 Media Books.

This position is open to remote employees residing outside of the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. For individuals located in the Twin Cities region, this can be a hybrid position with time spent working remotely and in our Minneapolis office.

The Acquisitions Editor holds key responsibilities in the following areas:
• Soliciting and evaluating proposals and manuscripts
• Preparing supportive materials and presenting new proposals to internal teams
and approval committee
• Advising and guiding authors through substantive revisions
• Develop and maintain a broad and diverse network among authors and agents in
their publishing categories
• Stays abreast of publishing and market trends
• Meet established financial thresholds and to be a collaborative team member
in driving growth for the imprint
• Prepares final manuscripts for production and participates in staff meetings
about list planning, production, and marketing
• Commitment to 1517 Media and Broadleaf Books’ mission, vision, and values

Desired education and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree
• 2-3 years of experience in adult trade acquisitions

Preferred education:
• Master’s or other advanced degree in the humanities or social sciences

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Excellent editorial skills and judgement
• Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
• Strong collaboration skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain a steady pipeline of projects
• Ability to cultivate positive, productive relationships with authors and
agents
• Strong organizational skills
• Keen attention to details
• Ability to set priorities and work independently
• Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem
resolution skills
• Ability to negotiate with authors and internal staff
• Superior interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated track record of successful editorial acquisitions work
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word, Excel, and
Outlook)
• Familiarity with basic financial statements and reporting
• Experience using social media for networking and marketing purposes
• Demonstrated experience in spirituality and religious publishing
• Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment, seeking continuous improvement
• Awareness of industry trends in adult nonfiction trade publishing
• Strong editorial judgment and ability to identify books that will meet
financial targets
• Strong negotiating and problem-solving skills
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
• Familiarity with basic financial statements and reporting
