Title: Assistant Editor

Job Purpose:
The Assistant Editor role serves as one step above an entry-level position within the Abrams Adult Editorial team, providing an excellent opportunity for those who aspire to pursue editorial careers in publishing. The position offers valuable experience, exposure to the publishing process, and a chance to work closely with authors/creators and Abrams professionals to shape and bring forth interesting content to readers worldwide.
Position Overview:
An Assistant Editor plays a crucial role within the Abrams Adult Editorial group, supporting the editorial team in various editorial and administrative tasks with a particular focus on the Entertainment list. This position will work closely with the Entertainment editor to ensure projects are produced efficiently and within budget.

Review and evaluate manuscripts submitted for consideration, assessing their quality, relevance, and potential for publication. Provide summaries and recommendations to editorial team.
• Assist in copyediting and proofreading manuscripts to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to publishing guidelines.
• Function as point person for select titles each season, including corresponding with the originating publisher or author and licensor, receiving, checking, and trafficking manuscripts, layouts, and color proofs.
• Assist with research and development for new projects.
• Organize, plan, and act as support staff for events, including Launch and author book signings.
• Assist in obtaining necessary permissions and copyright clearances for previously published material or artwork used in the publications.
• Manage administrative tasks such as maintaining databases, filing documents, managing correspondence, recording, and circulating meeting minutes, maintaining schedules, preparing P&Ls, mailings, collating galleys, draft fact sheets, catalogue, and flap copy.
• Manage and maintain relationships with our licensing partners and learn their proprietary approval, file sharing, and submissions systems.
• Review proofs of final layouts to catch and identify any errors.
• Conduct market research and competitive analysis to identify trends and potential opportunities for new publications or editions.
• Format manuscripts according to agreed guidelines and standards, ensuring consistency throughout the text.
• Organize and maintain archives of published material and related documents for future reference.
• Respond to unsolicited proposals and inquiries, as needed.
• Act as liaison with authors, agents, packagers, and other outside contacts.
• Create PowerPoint presentations.
• Create and gather materials for sales and marketing as needed.

Qualifications:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential to effectively communicate with authors, editors, and other stakeholders.
• Must be meticulous and having a keen eye for detail is critical.
• Ability to handle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines is essential.
• Proficient with the MS Office Suites specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Ability to create and maintain simple databases.
• Knowledge of Adobe and InDesign a plus.
• Passion for publishing and popular culture: A genuine interest in books, film, television, animation, gaming, and the publishing industry is beneficial.
• Ability to pivot and change rapidly, and open to learning new processes and technologies.

Experience Required:
• Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field preferred.
• 1 – 2 years publishing and/or office experience


Hybrid schedule – Three days in person
