Duke University Press (DUP) seeks a capable and enthusiastic Editorial Assistant-Senior to support our Books Acquisitions group, working on books in the humanities and social sciences, and supporting all DUP books as they move through the peer-review process and into production. The Editorial Assistant-Senior is responsible for a number of essential tasks in the acquisitions process, and is directly involved in reviewing and drawing up contracts, as well as preparing manuscripts for production. Applicants for this role should possess strong communication and organizational skills, and have a desire to learn the ‘Ins & Outs’ of scholarly publishing. This entry-level position is designed as an entrée into scholarly publishing and editorial acquisitions. Primary Job Responsibilities Include: • Assisting editors with screening of manuscript proposals • Assisting editors with review the process; obtaining peer reviews of proposals and manuscripts; communicating with reviewers; and submitting requests for honorarium payments • Maintaining editorial records; tracking projects through the acquisition process; updating information in editorial databases • Communicating with authors about manuscripts and art preparation • Organizing artwork and permissions; communicating with DUP’s book production team about art and manuscript preparation • Preparing manuscripts for transmittal into production • Preparing materials for contract approval and for monthly editorial board meetings; drafting of book descriptions for editorial board packets • A variety of clerical and administrative responsibilities; other related support duties for the Book Acquisitions group; maintaining efficiency in organizational processes |
Requirements: | University-Required Education/Training: Work requires a general educational background normally equivalent to a high school education.
University-Required Experience: Work requires four years of experience, at least two of which involve directly related editorial responsibilities, to acquire skills in communications, editing, spelling, and general English rules sufficient to perform complex editorial duties. A college degree in Journalism, English, or a field of study directly related to the position may be substituted for equivalent experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE. Department-Preferred Experience & Skills: Excellent writing and communication skills; the ability to juggle and prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines in a busy work environment; ability to work cooperatively in a team environment; intellectual curiosity; capacity for creative thinking; ability to engage with academic works, regardless of applicant’s main field of study. |
