Title: Editor, Melville House
Description: Melville House is looking for an imaginative and gumptious individual to join our editorial program, someone who is adept at both the acquisition and the creation of book projects -- editors, in other words, who have experience working with agents and scouts, yes, but also know how to discover great authors by means other than going out to lunch. We also seek someone who is skilled at the acquisition and editing of both fiction and nonfiction.

Candidates must of course have full command of standard editorial skills as well as strong writing skills -- they should be an adroit line editor, copy writer, tip sheet compiler, bisac-code-understander, and so forth.

As Melville House is an extremely collaborative workplace, we're also looking for someone who plays well with others, and can work closely with the sales, marketing, and publicity departments to support their books beyond the acquisition and editing stages. Indeed, as we expect our editors to stick with a book even beyond its publication, we seek someone with a strong sense of book marketing and publicity.

In short, we're looking for someone who is well-versed in the fundamentals, has good contacts, a renegade sensibility that maybe doesn't fit in the corporate box and certainly understands the differences between indie publishing and the big houses, and who is not daunted and is in fact a bit excited by the changes sweeping the industry today.

Salary range is $60,000 to $70,000, depending on experience.

Melville House works on a hybrid schedule: Monday - THursday in-office, Fridays remote.

Melville House is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values the perspectives of a diverse workplace. All qualified applicants will be considered.

Requirements: THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY LEVEL JOB.

Candidates must have:

• At least 3 years’ experience working at a trade book publishing house or university press

• a well-developed sense of organization

• a keen ability to work within schedules and under deadline pressure

• more than passing familiarity with the company's list

• a sense of humor, for god's sake

Company: MELVILLE HOUSE
Location: Brooklyn
How To Apply For This Job: Applications should be sent digitally to Chris Alexander at pubassist@mhpbooks.com. Please include, as a pdf attachment, a full resume as well as a cover letter addressed to publishers Dennis Johnson and Valerie Merians. In your cover letter, please discuss not only your experience, but how your skills match up to our list.
