Title: Summer 2022 Marketing Intern, Avalon Travel
Description: Hachette Book Group’s summer internship program offers students an opportunity to learn about the publishing industry and explore an area of interest. To enhance your work experience, we offer educational sessions featuring speakers from all departments of the company as well as networking and career development opportunities.

About Avalon Travel: We are the publishers of Rick Steves and Moon Travel Guides, two of the top brands in travel reference. Our team seeks an intern who would like to learn more about consumer marketing, brand marketing, or reference publishing.

Program dates: June 6th – August 12th (10 weeks)

Location: All summer 2022 internships will be virtual. Company laptop will be provided for the duration of the internship. Circumstances permitting, an intern in the San Francisco Bay Area has the option to arrange in-person time with select staff in Avalon’s Berkeley office location.

Weekly schedule: 28 hours per week, Monday-Thursday, 9:00am-5:00pm. As Avalon is based in Berkeley, CA, availability during Pacific Time business hours is preferred.

Pay rate: $15/hour or the local minimum wage, whichever is higher.

Avalon’s Summer Intern will learn how to:

Send review copy mailings for titles via our in-house system
Design digital assets and print materials for sales and consumer marketing
Approach social media campaign planning and assist with multi-channel content creation
Research media contacts and draft pitch emails for upcoming titles
Evaluate marketing goals and monitor digital advertising and website analytics
Requirements: The ideal candidate:

A current student (degree or certificate program), Spring/Summer 2022 graduate interested in exploring book publishing as a career
Has strong writing skills, excellent communication habits, and attention to detail (i.e. cross-checking and proofing materials)
Is proficient in social media and has demonstrated interest in brand messaging, copywriting, or content creation
Can perform basic spreadsheet operations and use track changes in a Word or Google Doc
Willing to ask questions and have good follow-up on tasks
