Title: Assistant to Literary Agent

Requirements: We are seeking a freelance virtual assistant in the greater San Francisco Bay Area to provide administrative and editorial support to the agency and to principal and agent Jonah Straus. The ideal candidate will possess excellent organizational and communications skills, and show initiative and resourcefulness in maintaining, improving, and implementing administrative systems.

Experience in an administrative role and proficiency in Excel and QuickBooks (or similar accounting software) is desired. Experience in a publishing or editorial role is preferred and proficiency in maintaining schedules in Airtable or similar platforms and managing websites via Squarespace a plus.

This role will be focused on administrative support with an editorial component, including reviewing submissions and prospecting for literary talent. There is an opportunity for this editorial role to expand over time and as such, we prefer candidates who are well read in contemporary literary fiction and narrative nonfiction as well as classic literature.

You will be an independent contractor and will work remotely and set your own schedule while remaining generally available via email and phone, and attending weekly video meetings and monthly in-person meetings in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a unique opportunity for a passionate and capable person who seeks a well-rounded introduction to the book publishing industry.

In this role some of your responsibilities will be to:

• Provide general administrative and accounting support
• Help devise, implement, and maintain new administrative systems
• Interact with clients on administrative matters
• Process and record contracts
• Track, process, and analyze royalty statements and payments
• Maintain and update databases
• Coordinate and track foreign rights submissions and licensing
• Schedule appointments for book fairs and conventions
• Track book publication schedules
• Maintain and update website on Squarespace
• Review and evaluate submissions and manuscripts
• Provide editorial feedback
• Prospect for potential clients via literary magazines, awards
shortlists, writing fellowships and other sources
