Title: Senior Designer
Description: Position Summary
Join an innovative, dynamic, and growing children’s team at one of the foremost trade publishers. Work closely with Associate Art Director and Editorial team to help shape the visual direction of our dynamic brand-driven and licensed publishing lists. Responsibilities will include designing and art directing branded and licensed publishing across all ABRAMS children’s imprints and formats (including novelty, chapter books, middle-grade, YA, and graphic novels) that enhance and build upon some of the biggest brands and entertainment for children and teens.

Essential Functions
· Provide art direction and support to associate art director on design projects across Amulet, Abrams Books for Young Readers and Appleseed imprints
· Conceptualize, design and manage branded fiction and licensed books including working with key licensing partners such as Lucasfilm, Marvel, Disney, Hasbro, and Netflix.
· Develop branding and series look for Abrams intellectual property
· Work closely with editors to define the look and feel of each cover and series
· Create mood-boards for new projects providing a wide range of illustration/typography talent to fulfill the needs of each project
· Scout, hire, manage, and provide art direction to freelance designers and illustrators
· Design covers, interiors, and components for approximately 15-20 new titles per year
· Design and layout interior pages into design mechanicals to specifications for each book.
· Make corrections to routing mechanicals and release to production


Requirements: Key Skills / Experience
· Minimum of 5-7 years of design experience in book publishing, with knowledge of working with licensors and branded franchises
· Exceptional communication, precision, organization and time management skills—must be detail-oriented
· Experience in developing and designing series branding
· Familiarity and interest in popular licensed properties
· Experience working with high-profile authors
· Creativity, originality, willingness to experiment, learn, grow and share knowledge with the design and editorial teams
· Understanding of the commercial market and design trends of licensed books, branded series and commercial book covers
· Ability to manage multiple freelance designers and work with outside packagers
