Title: Senior Designer, Children’s
Description: Workman Publishing’s children’s department is growing! We’d like to add several designers at mid-to-senior level to help us to create innovative children’s books.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

You love to collaborate with editors, writers, illustrators, and other designers to develop new ideas. You’re a detail-oriented perfectionist who loves to dig into the weeds of a design project, to make sure everything is thought-out and harmonious. You’re gratified by a project that is running smoothly, and adept at problem-solving when a book is complicated and needs some extra TLC. In your spare time, you like to draw, do lettering or paper engineering, and you’d be very excited to put those skills to use.

Here are some of the things you might do in a typical week here:
• Design pages for our “Big Fat Notebook” series—it’s a very creative design, but also detail-oriented and fairly involved.
• Design a book cover, and revise it based on feedback from the art director, editors, and sales team.
• Attend a production meeting, prepared with notes on the status of all our children’s titles.
• Research illustrators for a new project we’re developing.
• Meet with editors and the art director to discuss revisions to illustrations.
• Communicate with freelance illustrators to convey our feedback, and guide them in the right direction.
• Fine-tune the paper engineering for a pop-up book.
• Participate in our weekly children’s development meeting, where we share inspiration and devise exciting new projects.

• BFA in graphic design or a related field.
• At senior designer level: minimum five years of design experience, preferably in children’s publishing.
• Strong design skills, including InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
• Must be a collaborative team-player.
• Must be a creative problem-solver.
• Must be able to work under tight deadlines.

And a little about us:
We are publishers of award-winning cookbooks, parenting/pregnancy guides, books on gardening, country living, and humor, as well as children’s books, gift books, fiction, and the bestselling calendar line in the business. Our children’s line includes bestselling titles such as "Brain Quest," “Indestructibles" and "Big Fat Notebook." We’re located in Greenwich Village.
Location: New York, New York
