Title: Literary Agent's Assistant (full-time)
Description: — In this role, the assistant will learn every facet of the agency’s business from its president and founder, Joshua Bilmes, and will get to draw on his 35+ years of experience.
— Candidate will be responsible for administrative tasks such as database entry, filing, website maintenance, and handling general office mailings. One large responsibility will be in assisting the President and the COO with client payments.
— Another primary responsibility for Joshua’s assistant will be drafting, reviewing, mailing, and tracking agency contracts/deals. Taking them all the way from a publisher’s initial offer to the paying of advances to applying for reversions.
— Client management support including correspondence, development and tracking of manuscripts on submission (including the preparation of submission lists), scanning and distribution of royalty statements, and upkeep of client records.
— The assistant will also become the agency’s primary point of contact for the selling of tv/film and merchandise rights for JABberwocky’s client list, and become an expert in dramatic rights and their interaction with other publishing and ancillary rights.
— Appointment scheduling and calendar management for agency’s President.
— Initial screening of queries and partials for the agency’s President and overall management of his query in-box.
Requirements: — The candidate must be able to prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and handle special projects as they arise. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a necessity, and the candidate must be flexible, detail-oriented and extremely well-organized. This is an entry level position and our expectation is to train the Literary Agent’s Assistant in everything they need to know. However, we are looking for a candidate who is driven enough to know what tasks to be accomplished on a given day, to ask questions when they do not, and to get regular feedback from the agency’s president.
— At least one to two years of prior work experience in an office environment is preferred; experience in the book publishing industry is a plus, but not mandatory. While the ideal candidate will have experience with Apple/Mac computers, including Pages and Numbers, as well as with the FileMaker database platform, these are not required.— The JABberwocky office is on a hybrid schedule with a mix of in-office and work-from-home days. Initially, the assistant will be expected to work three to four days/week in the office to receive training. You must live in or near New York City to be available for in-office work.
— The ideal applicant has familiarity with and an enthusiasm for the authors we represent (please review our website at www.awfulagent.com).
— Our agency strives to maintain a COVID-free workplace. To that end, being fully vaccinated is a condition of employment for all new JABberwocky hires. We make reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants with disabilities, sincerely held religious beliefs, or other conditions protected by applicable law.
— JABberwocky Literary Agency, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
