Title: Assistant Editor
Description:
NYU Press seeks an Assistant Editor to work closely with the Executive Editor, Social Sciences in the acquisition and editing of manuscripts for Press in the social sciences (e.g. politics, sociology, and criminology). This position will assist in the research, review, and evaluation of prospective manuscripts; make recommendations to the NYU Press Editorial Committee on whether to publish selected manuscripts, and liaise with marketing, finance and production departments. The Assistant Editor will solicit peer reviews from specialist academic readers, negotiate with authors to approve revisions and suggestions for revisions; review copy, and ensure correct language, grammar, syntax, and spelling, in order to guarantee high-quality publications. Additionally, this position will oversee day-to-day publication operations including preparing and transmitting manuscripts, drafting catalog and flap copy, corresponding with authors and series editors, securing permissions and preparing in-house documents. Occasional travel to academic conferences and supervision of student workers.
Requirements: Required Education:
Bachelor's degree in English, Philosophy, History or other related subject.

Preferred Education:
Masters Degree or Professional Certificate in Publishing

Required Experience:
2 years' publishing and copy editing experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Experience:
Experience attending scholarly conferences for the purpose of editorial input.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent organizational and written and verbal communication skills. Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students and external groups. Strong attention to detail and proofreading skills. Knowledge of standard office software and database packages.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Experience with MS Office Suite, PageMaker, and CATS Pajamas. Experience with FileMaker
