Sparkhouse is the ecumenical division of 1517 Media. The mission of Sparkhouse is to spark new life in Christian communities. We develop innovative faith formation resources for kids, youth, and adults through design thinking, innovation, collaboration, and creativity. Our team is small, nimble, and tuned into the changes and opportunities in the 21st century religious landscape. We are passionate about creating faith formation resources that make a difference.

The Sparkhouse team at 1517 Media is hiring summer interns who are interested in acquiring valuable skills in editing, writing, product development, and project management. Editorial interns will report to the Sparkhouse Resource Developer and will join the Congregational Development team for 12 action-packed weeks of publishing stellar print and online resources for children, youth, and their families.

It Starts with a Spark
This paid Sparkhouse internship provides an educational experience built on hands-on training, instructive feedback, and challenging projects. We think it’s the best publishing internship in town.

Create. Inspire. Grow.
Sparkhouse interns support the process of designing, developing, editing, and publishing Sparkhouse resources for children and youth. This includes the following specific functions:
• Support the development of briefing materials for writers, reviewers, illustrators, and internal designers
• Support the maintenance of writer relationships
• Support the editing of manuscripts and testing activities
• Write original content for use in resources and on social media sites
• Conduct research on denominational trends, demographic patterns, competitor products, and other topics as needed

Seeking Learners With:
• Major or minor in journalism, English, theology/religion, and/or education
• Experience working with the process of writing and publishing (i.e., campus newspaper, college alumni magazine, writing center)
• Experience with children and/or youth in educational, congregational, and/or outdoor ministry settings
• Necessary: Strong written and oral communication skills
• Necessary: Ability to work on and prioritize multiple projects
• Necessary: Fluency with Microsoft Office
• Helpful: Active participation in congregational life and/or Christian organizations
• Helpful: Working knowledge of CMOS
• Helpful: Working knowledge of InDesign
• Helpful: Working knowledge of general editorial processes

Sparkhouse is the ecumenical division of 1517 Media, the publishing ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The 1517 Media paid internship program is robust, and includes an exciting and fun company culture, paid time off, and no-cost gym access in the 510 Marquette fitness center! The beautiful, newly re-designed corporate headquarters hosts 100 employees and is located in downtown Minneapolis with adjacent access to light rail and MetroTransit bus lines, as well as skyway access to restaurants, banks, and shopping centers.


Length of Internship: End of May-End of August
Location: Minneapolis, MN
