[Back to Internships]

Company Name: INSTAR BOOKS
Description: Instar Books is looking for a short duration intern/volunteer to help us with publicity tasks related to our publishing program. Primary duties you’d be involved with will include researching contacts for individual book projects, assisting in event promotion, providing active outreach on social media for our books and authors, maintaining and constructing press kits, and writing press releases. Additionally, where possible, we’ll have some light proofreading and production work available. Will also train on the publishing cycle generally, with the goal of leaving people at the conclusion of the internship with a good understanding of the different areas of publishing and with useful experience for seeking paid employment.

DIVERSITY STATEMENT: We recognize that the publishing industry, like every industry, is a reflection of broader society: i.e., containing institutional barriers to the advancement of people outside mainstream channels of cultural privilege. We’re committed to doing our part toward changing that, to whatever extent we can, by making diversity in choosing who we work with and provide work experience to a major priority. Thus we especially, especially, especially invite people from traditionally underrepresented groups, as well as people with a strong and demonstrated interest in literary publishing but without elite collegiate experiences (or other traditional class markers), to apply for this.

MECHANICS: _Maximum_ twelve hours a week, twelve weeks, working remotely. (If you’re based in New Orleans or New York City, we can occasionally meet, but currently the company is a remote affair.)

This is an unpaid/volunteer internship, but we will actively provide letters of reference and recommendations as needed, and we’ll help to promote whatever personal creative work you’d like to promote. (We'll also try to work out an agreement for a small stipend to cover any transportation or other costs necessary to perform the volunteer work, if applicable.)
Length of Internship: Three months
Requirements: Must have good access to a computer. Must be financially able to work the hours requested without regular compensation. Must like writing and like fiction a lot, with genre tastes that are difficult to define. Must be savvy. Must have some basic knowledge of how to be polite yet effective on social media. We definitely prefer people who are involved in some ongoing creative project whose primary compensation is love rather than money.
Location: Remote (New Orleans, New York)
Application Due Date: November 15, 2015
Payment: transportation stipend
How To Apply For This Internship: Please send a cover letter and resume or some other statement of your experience, along with a creative writing sample and/or links to any creative work you do, to It’s worthwhile but not strictly necessary to look at the books we publish and our current catalog at

Resumes accepted on a rolling basis, but we are looking to start someone by mid-November 2015 to assist in upcoming publicity tasks.
We look forward to meeting you!
