Description: The MIT Press seeks enthusiastic spring interns in various departments. These unpaid internships are a chance for people who love books and journals to learn about publishing and see how a busy university press functions. Successful interns will make valuable contacts and gain experience at one of the nation's largest university presses.

Internships are available in Books Acquisitions, Books Editorial, Books Sales, Books Publicity, Technology, and Digital Products. These are unpaid, part-time internships from February through May. Hours will be negotiated, but candidates should be able to commit at least 10 hours per week.

The ideal intern candidates will have: a strong desire to learn about publishing, basic computer skills, excellent communication and organizational skills, the ability to work well individually and as a member of a group, an eye for detail, good judgment, a positive attitude, and a willingness to take initiative.

Books Acquisitions: The Books Acquisitions intern will work in the department responsible for contracting, receiving, and assessing both book proposals and manuscripts for potential publication. This intern will be responsible for tasks such as general manuscript preparation, placing orders with our warehouse, general data entry into our database, possible long term research projects, and a variety of other tasks. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about scholarly publishing in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Books Editorial: The Books Editorial internship will provide experience with a variety of editorial tasks, including checking revised page proofs, editing indexes, proofreading jacket copy, reviewing prepress proofs, and handling corrections for reprints. The intern will also learn about the editorial technology that we are now using at the MIT Press. College graduates and graduate students with editorial experience and familiarity with Chicago style are strongly preferred.

Books Production: The Books Production intern will be involved in learning the entire process of production and manufacturing by helping with daily production tasks, such as assisting with the weekly budgeting of reprints, evaluating print platforms for reprint transfers, and examining proofs and scanning copies. There may also be an opportunity for aiding the senior production coordinator with the Print on Demand loading process. In addition to these backlist projects, interns will also be involved with the production department’s frontlist duties by sending materials to typesetters, corresponding with printers to save press time for our work, and preparing paginations. In order to give a rounded knowledge of the department, interns are invited to shadow members of the department and, if timing allows, attend a printing and manufacturing plant tour or Book Builders of Boston event(s).

Books Sales: The Books Sales intern will primarily support the in-house sales department. Daily tasks vary, but may include: investigating market channels for lead titles; thinking creatively about special sales and marketing opportunities locally; researching businesses and creating mailing databases for special sales outreach nationally; tracking title availability on Amazon and other major accounts; preparing and distributing promotional materials; researching international bookstores and faculty to expand outreach. The Books Sales Intern will also be given the opportunity to attend department meetings, launch meetings at which acquisitions and other key personnel discuss details of future titles, and our biannual Sales Conference, during which acquisitions editors present the entire list to our international sales force.

Books Publicity: Books Publicity interns will learn about marketing and promoting books to the media. Their primary responsibilities include scanning and distributing book reviews, maintaining and updating the reviews database, assisting with galley and press release mailings, working with the MIT Press blog, researching journals and other media, inputting reviewer requests, and other general assistance. Office and/or publishing experience, as well as familiarity with Filemaker or other database software, is a plus, but not required.

Digital Production Department (CogNet): The intern will support MIT Press’s cognitive neuroscience portal, CogNet. Tasks will include: retrieving files from MIT Press’ FTP; uploading journal articles in Drupal on CogNet; performing quality assurance checks of author affiliation information, fixing incorrect information, and adding any missing information. Also, the intern will process books for CogNet which includes: running scripts in a Bash (Unix) shell to extract individual PDF chapters from book PDF; creating custom CogNet branded covers in Adobe Photoshop; appending covers and copyright pages, as well as adding metadata to individual PDF chapters in Adobe Acrobat; processing and loading chapter and cover files, as well as entering metadata in Drupal on CogNet. Familiarity with Drupal is a plus, but not required.

Technology: The Technology CMS intern will help to administer the Content Management Systems underlying several MIT Press websites. The intern will learn to perform maintenance and upgrades, and will implement and document new features while following each site's workflow standards. This is an opportunity for a college student with some background in web platforms (e.g., Drupal) to gain experience and knowledge in a supportive and challenging scholarly publishing environment.

Technology: The Technology Documentation intern will write technical documentation, wiki pages, and other supporting material for users of a broad range of publishing systems and tools. The intern will interview programmers and users, draft documentation, review it with subject matter experts, and publish the final documentation using Microsoft Word and wiki templates. This is an excellent technical writing internship for an upper-class or graduate student who would like broad exposure to different technologies and would welcome working in a collegial and creative environment.
