[Back to Internships]

Company Name: PEN AMERICAN CENTER
Description: PEN America: A Journal for Readers and Writers seeks volunteer interns to assist with production of the magazine, both ink-and-paper and online editions. The journal is published by PEN American Center, the largest branch of the world’s leading literary and human-rights association. Each issue contains a mix of essays, fiction, memoir, poetry, conversations, interviews, and commentary. Work from past issues has been selected for Best American Essays, Best American Stories, and the Pushcart Prize.

Editorial interns are closely involved with all stages of production on projects including our annual journal, PEN America chapbooks, and a new online forum series. Responsibilities may entail the transcription of literary events and readings, researching, proofreading, fact-checking, processing orders, assisting with mailings, and miscellaneous office tasks. Interns work with journal editors in the PEN office in SoHo, where the staff focuses on free expression advocacy, prison writing, literary awards, the World Voices Festival of International Literature, and other PEN programs.

Applicants must be curious, eager to learn, attentive to detail, and familiar with Microsoft Word and the Windows operating system. Previous office experience, either in publishing or nonprofit organizations, is desirable. Excellent communication skills and an interest in literature and writing are a must. Interns are expected to work between 8 and 15 hours a week.
